I have different type of hard floors. Light coloured laminate floor in the kitchen, solid oak floor in the living room, hard wood in the hall and vinyl flooring in the bathroom. Over the years, I have purchased nearly all kind of cleaning equipment such as steam cleaner, electric mops, powered polishers but none dealt with the cleaning job very well so I can give up my mop. I normally spend 2 hours a week hover the floors, mop, then remove the residue water with a Kärcher window vacuum. The job is one of the chores that I hate the most.

Kärcher’s FC5 promises to wash, scrub, polish and vacuum as it goes. It sounds like a dream machine which can make floor cleaning less cumbersome and even enjoyable. Now I have been using it for 2 weeks and I am happy to report that Kärcher FC5 really is truly a fantastic piece of kit for floor cleaning.

It come nearly fully assembled. All I need to do is to slide the handle into the body and it is ready to roll. The cable is fairly long (~7 meters) and can easily cover a very large room. There is also a nice stand to keep the FC5 upright which is very handy. The stand can also be used to wet the roller prior to cleaning and wash the roller after use. Like all Kärcher product, it’s very yellow and feels very solid and well built. It’s fairly slim so takes up little floor space and is quite stable when stored between uses. When I was using a mop, it kept falling out of the bucket which was extremely annoying.

Kärcher FC5 is very straight forward to use. It’s a bit heavy (5kg with clean water tank full) but once it is going it is easy to move around and the pivoting head does make life slightly easier. The instruction says to hold onto the appliance firmly and I highly advise that you do. It has surprisingly powerful forward-drive momentum and you don’t want it to take off on its own.

On the front of the FC5 is the clean water/cleaning solution mix. A small handle releases the container to allow it to be filled up under a tap. To refit the container, simply push it back into its original position. The container is almost clear so you can see the water/cleaner solution level. The fresh water tank uses the water sparingly and so will be economical if using detergent. It can be used with clean water or any hard-floor cleaning solution made for machine cleaners. Karcher offers a range of solutions that cover all kind of floors.

On the back is the filter and dirty water tank. Emptying the tank is easy to do and you see all the dirt and bits that the FC5 has picked up.

With twin forward-rotating fleece rollers and powerful suction behind, the FC5 glides over surfaces with no effort at all. It also cleans up to edges. The rollers draw clean water from the tank and rotates to collect dust while moistening and scrubbing the floor. At the rear of the rollers, a squeegee and vacuum slot draws dirt and dirty water out of the roller’s fleece surface and into the waste tank. The ease of not vacuuming first does make a significant difference. The rotating motion can easily remove the toughest stains. Fleece on rollers do not get to dirty to continue cleaning like others do and need replacing. They almost clean themselves. If you want to, they can be easily twist off and are machine washable.

It cleans hard floors with enthusiasm, removing loose debris and even the worst dried-on stains, then buffs sealed laminates to perfection. The results are fantastic. I don’t think my floors have ever been this clean. Even after I have just cleaned my floors with mop and feel they are in a reasonable state of cleanliness, the colour of the waste water tank tells me that this have been an illusion. You will be surprised to see how much dirt a mop and bucket leaves behind.

As it does not soak the floor like a mop (only moist), any remaining surface water soon dries leaving a streak free finish. Residual water was something of concern for my sealed solid oak flooring especially in wet England winter but the FC5 doesn't leave much residual water.

Now it takes me around 30 minutes to clean the house.

Final thought

A fantastic all-round hard-floor cleaner that produce fabulous result. Highly recommended.

Design:
The Samsung Galaxy book is a beautiful piece of kit, the overall build quality and ports layout are near perfect.
The chassis is made of aluminium and is solidly built with no flex or creaks. It is razor thin and the rounded edges make it very comfortable to hold. The power and volume control keys are on the upper left of the tablet and also crafted out of aluminium which gives satisfying feedback when clicked. On the upper right you can find the CPU vent so no hot air blown to your hand. On the right-hand side there are a stereo speaker and two USB-C 3.0 ports. Each USB-C can serve as charging port that supports quick charge but neither is thunderbolt compatible so no heavy gaming using external graphic card. It would have been nice if Samsung has included a USB-C to USB-A adapter as most peripherals are still USB-A. But these are dirt cheap so no harm done. On the left-hand side sits the other stereo speaker and micro SD card slot, which needs a pin open.

There is a 5.0MP front facing camera that doesn’t support Windows Hello. The rear facing camera is a 13.0MP shooter with autofocus but I really think the law shouldn’t allow people to take pictures with a 12inch tablet. Both cameras support 4x digital zoom.

There is no built-in kickstand so you will need to use the included keyboard stand which has 3 positions. The backlighting keyboard cover is covered with grey plastic. It’s not leather but comfortable to touch and looks good and elegant. Key travel and response are good. Typing is fairly comfortable so long time typing shouldn’t be of any issue. The function keys all carry double function such as display brightness, volume and keyboard backlight keys etc. The functions can be switched using the fn lock key or use as combo with fn key. Backlighting is three stages and works well in low-light situations.

The trackpad is pretty good as well. It's a Precision Touchpad, supporting the full range of built-in Windows touch gestures.

The magnets that hold the keyboard to the galaxy book is very strong. And you have pull really hard to remove the keyboard.
Display

If I was asked to give one reason to pick this over any other tablet/laptop on the planet, it has to be the gorgeous Super AMOLED display. The display without a doubt the star of the show here. It measures at 12 inch and has a resolution of 2160 x 1440 with the ideal 3:2 aspect ratio. It is ten-point multi-touch with glossy edge-to-edge glass.

The super AMOLED screen on the galaxy book is simply the most stunning screen I have seen on a tablet and this is clear from the moment you press the power button. The colours are vivid with immaculate black and white contrast is immaculate, and everything just looks great. This screen is also support 10bit HDR which makes consuming media like movies movie a dream.

Pen inking

The S Pen is produced by Wacom with 4,096 levels of pressure. It feels very light in hand and doesn’t require charging. There is no place to store the pen so you have to be careful not losing it. The pen only has one button which provides a mouse-like interface. Another usefully feather is Air Command with functions like Smart Select that lets you capture areas of your screen and share them out, or create and animated GIF of an area of your screen with up to 15 seconds of recorded content. Naturally, all Microsoft functions such as Windows Ink, Sketch Pad, Screen Sketch, Sticky Notes etc. are all present and works well.

The S Pen on the Galaxy book is very fluid and smooth.

Audio

The dual stereo speakers are at both sides of the display. The placement means they are side firing, with good fidelity and stereo separation.

Cameras

The front-facing camera is a 5MP module. It is quite bright and looks good in video – definitely sufficient for those skype calls. The rear 8MP autofocus camera is also good for a tablet camera and you can use it to snap a photo in a pinch and not cringe at the quality.

Benchmarks

I don’t really believe in benchmarks as the differences between various machines with same Intel internals are trivial and can’t really be felt in real life. In addition, modern CPUs are very capable of most of the daily tasks that we throw to them. However, with that said, I do want to show the Crystal Disk Mark Scores as I believe SSD speed is the performance bottleneck of a lot of modern PCs and can really determine the user experience. The SSD in the galaxy book is good, but not good enough. It has the SATA III interface so in that sense it’s not bad but I think Samsung really should have included a PCIe NVMe SSD unit here especially when they make SSDs found in most high end machines. In short, a SATA III SSD in a £1000 plus machine is simply not acceptable.

CrystalDiskMark (higher is better)

Battery

The fan did come on more than I would like and was audible, though barely above a whisper with no whine or high-pitch noises. In a room with ambient noise, you shouldn’t find the fan annoying.
For battery life, Samsung claims 11 hours and I have achieved 6.5 hours using a closed-loop video test with 50% brightness and 50% volume with Wi-Fi on. Nothing ground breaking here but for such a thin machine, it’s still respectable.

Can't configure a PIN

Search Edit group policy
1. "Turn on Convenience PIN sign-in" policy (as above) must be enabled, Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Biometrics "Allow domain users to log on using biometrics"
2. All 3 Policies under Computer Configuration\Administrative Templates\Windows Components\Windows Hello for Business\ must be in the state "Not configured".   This was the piece that was missing, and not documented properly on Technet.
After the policy changes and a restart, PIN and fingerprint options were available.

2016-12-24, living with Samsung Gear S3- how to use S-health

Found this in-depth S health guide on wearable, it's very detailed.

Samsung s-health-guide

Samsung Gear S3 common quesitons and answers

  • What is the difference between the frontier and classic?
Styling is the main difference. They both measure the same (46.1 x 49.1 x 12.9mm), while the Frontier is a shade weightier at 62g to the Classic's 57g. The Frontier is the more rugged looking and comes with a rubberised strap as standard, while the more classic looking Classic comes with a black leather strap as standard. However, both models can accept any 22mm standard watch strap - not just those provided by Samsung. The Frontier has larger, textured buttons, which resemble more the sportswatch-like design compared to the more protruding metal buttons of the Classic. Features are identical for both. But just because the Frontier looks the sportier model, doesn't mean it comes with a sportier feature set. Indeed both Gear S3 models are IP68 dust-proof and water-resistant, and both feature built-in gyro, accelerometer, barometer, GPS and optical heart-rate monitor. So both Frontier and Classic are capable of fitness and tracking - a feature Samsung is keen to push with its S Health app. In some territories (only in USA at the moment) a second version of the Frontier will come equipped with LTE/3G for on-the-go connectivity. The batteries are also the same so battery will be very similar. Both Gear S3 models are controlled by a combination of rotational bezel, twin buttons and touchscreen. In summary, then, the Frontier and Classic aren't hugely different at all. Their feature set only differs by the Frontier's addition of 5g weight, its different strap and the more rugged looking, sportier design.
  • Is the watch really that big?
This watch is 46mm. It looks large on a man and giant on most female wrists. I am 170cm of average build and I think it looks fantastic (to my eyes) on my wrists. The S2 will still be on sale of if you want a smaller watch, that’s the choice.
  • Is it easy to switch band?
Super easy, the frontier comes with silicon bands and classic comes with leather bands. There are two in the box, big and small. It’s takes standard 22mm bands so no limitation here.
  • Can you make and receive calls?
Yes! It has built in speaker and microphone, both classic and frontier, LTE or non --LTE. The speaker loud and clear, but definitely not super high quality - perfect for calls, not so perfect for music. The microphone is decent, caller on the other end said it’s similar to regular phone. Non-LTE versions make calls through your phone via Bluetooth.
  • Can I receive and send message?
Yes, you can receive or send using the onscreen keyboard or S-voice.
Can I read my notification? Such as emails, text messages, etc.
Yes, definitely. Also, notifications from any other apps that you choose.
  • Does it have LTE?
This is where everything gets confusing. There are two versions of Gear s3, classic and frontier. The former is a definite no no. for frontier, currently only the one from AT&T in US has LTE and no LTE everywhere else, whether this can be enabled via a software update, no one knows.
  • Can music be loaded onto the watch and played via Bluetooth headphone without phone?
Yes, you can load music on this. There is 4GB of internal storage for apps and music, which can be played via Bluetooth or speaker. However, only about 1.5G is available for music without installing any app.
  • Dose it track sleeps automatically?
Yes, it tracks sleep automatically.
  • Will it track stairs climbed?
It tracks floors, not necessarily stairs climbed. It uses the altimeter to measure increase in elevation.
  • Will it work with an Iphone?
Yes but it’s not perfect, there is a beta Tizen\Samsung software. It does have its limitations but it will sync.
  • As an Iphone user, can I use it with out phone?
Not the best idea. The Gear S3 performs its initial set up and firmware update using an android device and was designed specifically for Samsung smartphones. It is recommended that you use a compatible device to take advantage of all the features of this device. However, once the device has gone through initial setup, it may be used alone or simply paired with Bluetooth to any device.
  • Will Samsung Pay work?
In USA, yes. UK, not yet.
  • How long will the battery last during moderate use?
People definition of "moderate" varies so it's hard to say for sure. I have email, text, occasional phone calls, two 5K with GPS and it last around 2-3 days.
  • Does it has Spotify?
Yes, it just become available.
  • Can you connect this and a Bluetooth headphone to a phone at the same time?
Yes, I connected the watch and a BT head phone to my S7. I can play music on the phone and my watch to pause, forward or stop music and also make or answer calls.
The watch still gets notification.
  • It’s there continues heart rate monitor?
Yes, at rest, it will measure heart rate every 10 minutes. It will delivery continuous tracking and heart rate readings during exercise.
  • Can it recognize workout automatically?
Yes, it will picking up walking sessions, runs and even rowing machine sessions and it’s fairly accurate.
  • Does this have a smart alarm feature or app. One that will wake you up close to a scheduled time when you are out of a deep sleep?
Yes, it does have an alarm feature which provides both sound and vibration. It should get you out of your slumber. For smart alarm, you can always download Sleep as Android.
  • Can I set up and update a Samsung Gear S3 watch with a Samsung or other android tablet instead of an android watch?
Yes, as long as you can download the Samsung gear App, You can. But the functionalities will be limited like phone calls text messages. Emails, S health, watch faces and other notifications will work.

2016-12-20, Living with Samsung Gear S3-model selection, unboxing, and first impression

I have always been a massive smart watch fun and have owned the original pebble, Moto 360 Gen I, and Sony Smart watch 2.

I still own Moto 360 Gen II and Garmin forerunner 235 and wear them on separate occasions.

The Moto is my day to day driver as it looks like a normal watch and doesn’t make me look like a geek, although I am undoubtedly the biggest geek in my social circle. However, I can’t really use it for sports as it lacks GPS and the battery life is rather short. I use Garmin for sports activities, mainly running, hiking and biking, with it fast GPS, good sports tracking function and long battery life but its styling means I can’t wear to work or dinner parties.

Samsung gear S3 come into play as the perfect combination of the two. I have always been using Android wear due to the number of apps available. However, the current version of android wear on my moto left a lot to be desired and based on the reviews, Tizen has really grown over the years. Most importantly, the 4-5 day battery life is immensely impressive, my Moto’s can barely last for 1 day. In addition, built-in GPS (and the array of sensors) for sports tracking, ingenious rotating bezel, off-line music play, the beautiful AMOLED display, all make the gear S3 an ultimate smartwatch.

There are two versions of Gear S3, the more rugged Frontier for outdoor types and the Classic, which aims to be the more luxurious option of the two. Underneath, the two versions are exactly the same. Both are made of stainless steel, both are IP68 certified water resistant (which means you can submerge it in water of up to 1.5 metres for up to 30 minutes. You can't use it for swimming or diving though). Apple watch wins here. Both have the same internals(there is a LTE enabled Frontier version but I don't think you can buy it in UK), same sensors and both run Samsung's Tizen OS.

    Unboxing video:

As I am no where near a sports enthusiastic and love the minimal look of the Classic, it's the one I prefer and I think I made the right choice when I received it.

The watch is big, it's a lot bigger than my Moto GII but the bigger size means a bigger screen that can fit in more content. I am 170cm and of average build.

The bezel has grooves on its outer perimeter that makes it easier to rotate the bezel. Rotating the bezel gives a satisfying click but I wish the bezel was a bit thicker as it's not that easy to grip.

The S3 comes with a large leather band with a small one in the box. The bands are standard 22mm watchbands and is very easy to change.

Wireless charging makes the S3 a perfect desk clock. The charging cable is rather short but it's standard micro USB so can be replaced.
